Poland has detained eight people, including a 21‑year‑old Ukrainian, accused of preparing sabotage by sending explosive‑laden packages to Ukraine, officials said Tuesday.
Donald Tusk Announces Arrests
On Tuesday morning, former Prime Minister Donald Tusk posted on social media that the Security Service for Internal Affairs (ABW) had detained eight individuals suspected of preparing sabotage acts in recent days.
Jacek Dobrzyński Names the Ukrainian Suspect
At a press conference a few hours later, ABW spokesperson Jacek Dobrzyński revealed that among those arrested is 21‑year‑old Ukrainian citizen Danylo H., who lived near Warsaw, worked as a warehouseman, and carried out intelligence activities in Poland and Romania.
Co‑operation with Romanian Intelligence
The arrests resulted from joint operations between ABW and Romania’s SRI against aggressive Russian special‑forces activity. Romania also detained two other Ukrainians who cooperated closely with Danylo H., according to the ABW statement.
Charges and Sentencing
Danylo H. faces charges under Article 130, paragraphs 7 and 8 of the Polish criminal code for acting on behalf of Russian intelligence to sabotage by sending explosive and hazardous materials to Ukraine. He has been sentenced to a three‑month pre‑trial detention.
Rising Russian Threat in Europe
“Russia’s services are active everywhere. Poland stands on the front line and last flank of modern Europe,” Dobrzyński said. He warned that even teenagers are recruited by Russian agents in acts of sabotage, disinformation, and destabilization.
Poland’s Wider Crack‑Down
According to the minister’s spokesperson, Polish authorities have now detained 55 people working against Poland on orders from Russian intelligence.
