Polish Parliament Bans Fur Animal Breeding; Czarnek Outraged

Ten days after the parliament approved a ban on fur animal breeding, lawmaker Przemysław Czarnek slammed the measure on Radio Wnet, claiming it harms the economy and undermines animal welfare.

Parliament Votes Ban on Fur Animal Breeding

The Sejm approved a comprehensive ban on the breeding of fur-bearing animals, with 339 MPs supporting it, 78 voting against, and 19 abstaining. Two bills were considered: one from the Civic Coalition, Polish 2050, and the Left, which imposes a total ban from January 1 2029 except for rabbits; the other from PiS, Confederation, and Republicans, which proposes a 15‑year transition period. The government coalition’s draft is now moving to the Senate.

Czarnek’s Radio Wnet Comment

On October 20, Przemysław Czarnek appeared on the program “Popołudnie” on Radio Wnet to discuss the new law. He said that more than half of PiS deputies have yielded to ideological arguments from the left, which introduced the legislation, and that he has no intention of defending his colleagues.

Czarnek argues that law is a relationship between persons, and animals are not persons; therefore they have no rights. He stresses that humans possess obligations toward animals, such as respecting them and keeping them in good conditions, but he doubts that a ban alone would improve animal welfare.

Economic and Ideological Critique

The lawmaker contends that the ban is a mistake for both economic and ideological reasons. He claims it would damage the Polish countryside, offers no real protection for animals, and would benefit foreign producers such as Germans, Spaniards, and Portuguese where fur breeding is still legal.

Opposition to the Law

Czarnek stated that supporting the ban would be harmful to the economy and the Polish rural sector. He insists the measure adds nothing to animal protection and is driven by ideological motives rather than practical concerns.
