Suspect Arrested After Failed Explosive Detonation in Olszynki Grochowska Forest

Adrian D. was arrested on 16 October 2025 in Warsaw’s Olszynki Grochowska forest after he tried to detonate a homemade explosive device, prosecutors say.

Arrest After Failed Detonation Attempt

The District Prosecutor’s Office Warsaw‑Praga is pursuing a case against Adrian D., who was taken into custody on 16 October 2025 after an unsuccessful attempt to detonate an improvised explosive device in the Olszynki Grochowska forest. Prosecutor Karolina Staros said the proceedings began immediately after the arrest, following the man’s attempt to ignite a homemade explosive.

Description of the Device and Incident

According to Staros, Adrian D. tried to ignite an object resembling a can in the forest zone. The item originally began burning and smoking; when the man noticed a passerby, he shouted for them to step back because an explosion would soon occur. The device ceased smoking, and no explosion took place. The incident was reported to police by a witness who remained nearby, followed the man as he moved away, and observed the device fall from his jacket near a railway crossing during a passerby’s attempt to stop him.

Police Investigation and Evidence

Police searched Adrian’s clothing, personal items, and his residence, finding no other prohibited objects. Preliminary tests of the seized item revealed three segments of factory‑made fireworks fuse, 50.4 g of explosive material with a composition comparable to black powder, typical of a homemade device, and residues of flammable liquids. Prosecutors stated the object could have served as an improvised explosive device, but its lightweight design and weak explosive content would not pose a serious blast risk to many people.

Charges and Potential Sentence

Investigators presented the suspect with two charges: producing—without required permission—an explosive device containing material similar to black powder, and using that device on 16 October 2025. Both acts are classified under article 171 § 1 of the criminal code, and Adrian faces up to eight years in prison.

Decision on Temporary Arrest

After the suspect’s involvement, the prosecutor placed him under police supervision. The request for temporary arrest was withdrawn because preliminary findings indicated the device did not endanger many people’s lives or health, the suspect did not try to detonate it near the railway tracks, and he had warned a passerby of an imminent explosion. No evidence links his actions to other individuals.
