Safety Conference Highlights Surge in Pedestrian, Cyclist and Scooter Accidents

A press conference at the Masovian Voivodeship Office yesterday brought together the regional parliament chair, a county councilor, a safety promotion director, and the capital police traffic commissioner to spotlight the rising crash figures involving pedestrians, cyclists and electric‑scooter users.

Conference Highlights

A press briefing held yesterday before the headquarters of the Masovian Voivodeship Office in Warsaw drew the Chair of the Regional Parliament, a County Councilor, the Head of Public Safety Promotion and Captain Robert Bojarski of the Capital Police Traffic Command. They addressed the sharp increase in road incidents involving vulnerable road users.

Rising Accident Numbers

Police data show that the total number of crashes involving pedestrians, cyclists and electric‑scooter users rose year on year: 1,217 incidents in 2023 with 118 fatalities and 1,102 injuries; 1,307 incidents in 2024 with 122 deaths and 1,208 injuries; and 861 incidents from January to August 2025 with 55 fatalities and 798 injuries.

Prevention and Safety Advice

Speakers stressed that road safety depends on all participants obeying rules, showing mutual respect, and upholding responsibility. They urged the use of helmets and reflective gear, noting that unprotected users face the highest risk of serious injury in an accident.

Electric Scooter Accident Surge

The use of electric scooters has grown rapidly, and with it the number of related incidents. In 2023 there were 66 scooter‑related accidents, rising to 106 in 2024 and 123 recorded by August 2024. The majority of these accidents involve children aged 7 to 14.

Cyclist Safety and Statistics

Incidents involving cyclists also climbed: 481 in 2023, 555 in 2024, and 376 between the start of 2025 and its midpoint. Speakers advised cyclists to use dedicated bike lanes or, where absent, to ride on the road following the 50 km/h speed limit. At crosswalks, cyclists must dismount and escort their bike across. Children up to ten years should ride on footpaths under adult supervision, and those over ten should hold a bicycle card.
