Court Convicts Three Saboteurs Over EU Fires

Three men—Serhii R., Pawel T., and Vladyslav I.—were sentenced on October 24 for aiding a sabotage group that ignited large facilities in Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Russia.

Verdict for Saboteurs

The National Prosecutor’s Office announced the verdict on Friday 24 October, which had been delivered more than a month earlier. It concerns Serhii R., Pawel T. and Vladyslav I., all convicted of participating in a pre‑planned group operating across Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Ukraine and Russia that aimed to perpetrate sabotage and terrorist acts by setting fire to large surface facilities in EU member states. Investigators say the crimes were committed to “seriously intimidate many people and influence public opinion.” The accused acted together and in concert with other specified persons; proceedings are continuing against those individuals, prosecutor Nowak added.

Investigations Findings on Sabotage Actions

Serhii R. and Pavlo T. were convicted of obstructing the investigation into the fire at the IKEA store in Vilnius on 9 May 2024 and the hall at 44 Marywil Street in Warsaw on 12 May 2024. They helped Serhii Chalyi evade criminal liability, mainly by leaving Poland. They arranged his accommodation in a Warsaw hotel, assisted with purchase of flight tickets, supplied information facilitating escape, and finally transported him out of Poland onto Czech territory, paying his stay in Austria. Pavlo T. received a total sentence of 5½ years imprisonment; Serhii R. was sentenced to 2½ years; Vladyslav Y. received 1 year and 4 months imprisonment.
