The incident occurred on 14 October in central Mielec, Podkarpackie Voivodeship, when a 50‑year‑old woman was struck by a private Audi while correctly crossing a marked crosswalk. Police were notified at 19:25 and confirmed that the driver fled the scene before being apprehended.
He was later arrested about an hour later on a city parking lot, where breathalyser tests revealed a 1.35 mg L⁻¹ alcohol concentration.
Prosecutor: Charges Against 47‑Year‑Old Firefighter
On 22 October, the Tarnobrzeg District Prosecutor’s Office announced that the local prosecutor in Mielec had brought charges against a 47‑year‑old resident of Kolbuszowe County, a professional firefighter of the County Fire and Rescue Service Command in Kolbuszowa. He is suspected of causing a traffic accident while intoxicated, failing to assist the victim, and operating a vehicle under the influence of alcohol.
The court has already imposed a temporary arrest of three months as a preventive measure.
Possible Consequences
The firefighter faces up to 18 years of imprisonment for the alleged offenses. He is also likely to be dismissed from service disciplinary‑ly.
According to former brigade Wojciech Stobierski, press officer for the Kolbuszowa County PSP commander, “If such an incident occurs, we act in accordance with the State Fire Service Act. The officer is suspended pending proceedings if the prosecutor notifies us of charges or suspicions. If a final judgment is entered, the officer is obligatorily dismissed from service.”
