Poland to Revert to Winter Time; Kosiniak‑Kamysz Calls for an End to Clock Shifts

Polish PSL leader Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz has called for ending yearly clock changes, as Poland moves from daylight saving to winter time on the night of October 25‑26.

Polish PSL Leader Calls for End to Clock Shifts

On the night of Saturday to Sunday, October 25‑26, Poland will stay one hour longer, switching back from summer time to winter time. The change means clocks will leap from 3 a.m. to 2 a.m.

Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz, Vice‑Prime Minister and head of the PSL, stated that the biannual clock change should be abolished. “Changing the time again brings nothing positive and only causes harm,” he wrote on the X platform. “It’s time to abandon this unnecessary and destructive practice—both in Poland and across the EU.”

In April, PSL members submitted a bill to the Sejm proposing the removal of the time‑change practice in Poland, replacing it with Central European Summer Time throughout the year. The bill received over 800 surveys in consultation, with 96 % of respondents supporting the proposal.

EU Stuck Over Time‑Change Debate

Although a large majority of Europeans favour eliminating the annual time shift, EU governments remain divided. The debate has been ongoing for seven years.

The European Commission, responding to public appeals, suggested ending clock changes, arguing they are costly and inconvenient for citizens and businesses. The European Parliament approved the proposal in 2019.

Anna‑Kaisa Itkonen, a Commission spokesperson, told Polish Radio: “We are back at the same place we were when the Commission presented its proposals. The ball is in the hands of member states. They must reach an agreement on a single time—either summer or winter—to avoid a staggered ‘checkerboard’ of different times that would create difficulties when crossing borders.”
