British police are actively searching for a 41‑year‑old Ethiopian man who was mistakenly released from Chelmsford prison on October 24, with authorities warning he poses a serious danger.
Mistaken release and current status
The 41‑year‑old Ethiopian citizen was freed in error from Chelmsford prison on Friday, 24 October. He had been convicted in September of a sexual assault on a 14‑year‑old girl and a woman in Essex, and was sentenced to 12 months. According to police, he was meant to be transferred to the deportation centre, not released, and was supposed to board a train to London. He is now believed to be in London.
Authorities warn of serious threat
Police say they are analysing surveillance footage to determine his next movements and have warned that he poses a “serious threat to society.” People who see him or know his whereabouts are urged to call the emergency number immediately.
Government and political response
Prime Minister Keir Starmer described the incident as “completely unacceptable” and said the man must be captured and deported. Justice Minister David Lammy called it a “serious mistake” and said the officer responsible has been suspended. The prison service has opened an internal inquiry. Conservative opposition leader Kemi Badenoch said the error illustrates how poorly state institutions are operating under the Labour government.
