Tusk Announces Merger of Civic Platform, Modern, and Polish Initiative

Donald Tusk announced that Poland’s Civic Platform, Modern, and Polish Initiative will merge into a single political entity during a convention in Katowice on October 24.

Merger of Three Parties

Civic Platform, Modern, and Polish Initiative will combine into one political grouping, forming a unified party structure.

Symbolic Unity Over Power

The merger is presented as a symbolic act of unity among liberal‑democratic forces rather than a purely electoral calculation.

Tusk highlighted that the goal is not power but the future of Poland, raising questions about the country’s sovereignty and the preservation of freedoms secured in 1989.

He noted that the convention’s timing coincides with a programmatic gathering of PiS, hoping to draw opposition attention to the unification strategy.

Timing and Naming

Although the official name remains undisclosed, the alliance is expected to be called the Coalition of Citizens.

Modern was dissolved on 24 October, and the Polish Initiative’s congress to confirm its dissolution will take place on 15 November.

Civic Platform plans statutory changes to allow party membership, with the new leadership slated for election by mid‑January 2026.
