Strong Wind Set to Hit Poland; Rescuers Issue Winter Warning in Karkonosze

Poland’s national weather agency warned of a strong wind across south‑western regions, while mountain rescuers posted footage of winter conditions in the Karkonosze, urging hikers to exercise caution.

Weather Warning for South‑Western Poland

Poland’s Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued a first‑level warning before strong wind for south‑western Poland. The alert covers the Lubusz, Greater Poland, Lower Silesian, Opole, Silesian and Łódź voivodeships, western Świętokrzyskie, north‑western Małopolska, and the central coast. Forecasts call for an average wind speed up to 45 km/h with gusts up to 75 km/h, from 14:00 on Sunday to midnight.

Winter Conditions in the Karkonosze Mountains

Rescuers from the Mountain Volunteer Rescue Service posted on social media that winter is already here in the Karkonosze. Ridge temperatures hover around 0 °C, but with wind speeds up to 19 m/s and 100 % humidity the wind chill drops to −10 °C and visibility is highly limited. A wet‑snow layer 5‑10 cm thick, piled by the wind, hampers movement, while lower slopes see rain and slippery trails.

Gradual Warming Expected This Week

According to IMGW, the beginning of the week remains cool, humid and windy, but temperatures will rise: maximum 8‑11 °C Monday and Tuesday, 6‑7 °C in foothill areas, and from Wednesday onward the weather will gradually warm, with more sunshine and less rain. Thursday should feel quite pleasant, even 16 °C.
