Polish weather services warned on Saturday that more than half the country would face snow, sleet and black ice, putting roads dangerous for the holiday weekend.
Weather forecast for December 27
Most of the day will be dominated by heavy cloud cover, with entire regions occasionally covered. Northern Poland may also experience fog that can reduce visibility to about 300 m. Spotty breaks of sunshine are possible in the south and, to a lesser extent, in the north during the latter part of the day. Many areas will see sleet, rain‑with‑snow, and snow, while the southerly sleet may be freezing and prone to forming black ice.
First‑degree warnings across 14 voivodeships
The Institute of Meteorology and Water Management issued first‑degree warnings for 14 administrative regions. The most likely precipitation will arrive in the afternoon of Saturday, and the warning remains in force until the evening, some places until 22:00. The freezing rain will make roads and pedestrian paths slick throughout the festive weekend, demanding extreme caution from drivers and pedestrians, as the conditions present real risks to health and life.
Strong winds near the Baltic coast
In addition, the institute warns of powerful winds in the coastal counties of the Pomeranian voivodeship. Winds are forecast to average up to 45 km/h, with gusts reaching 80 km/h, the strongest occurring overnight from Saturday to Sunday. Daytime temperatures will range from about 0 °C in central and southern Poland, up to roughly 7 °C in the north, while some southern areas may drop to around –1 °C.
Fatal black‑ice accident in Warsaw
On Friday, December 26, a fatal incident occurred in Warsaw’s Gocław district on the Praga‑Południe side. A 73‑year‑old man fell from a first‑floor balcony onto the sidewalk when he slipped on the icy, slippery surface. Despite medical rescue efforts, the man could not be saved.
