A 24-year-old Polish woman awoke from abdominal surgery in Poznań to find her reproductive organs had been removed without her consent.
Initial Diagnosis
“Gazeta Wyborcza” reported the case of 24-year-old Wiktoria, who visited the Municipal Hospital named after Franciszek Raszei in Poznań in April 2024 due to abdominal pain. An ultrasound and CT scan detected a four-centimeter change on her right ovary, which doctors suspected might be an ovarian tumor.
Delayed Notification
Wiktoria was operated on by Prof. Dariusz S., who has been heading the gynecology department at the Raszei Hospital for two years. According to “Gazeta Wyborcza,” the gynecologist informed the 24-year-old about the removal of her organs only four days after the surgery. The prosecutor’s office states that such an extensive procedure was not medically justified.
Prosecutor’s Investigation
As reported by Radio Poznań, on Thursday, February 26, spokesperson for the Poznań District Prosecutor’s Office Łukasz Wawrzyniak confirmed to PAP that according to experts, irregularities occurred during the operation. It was established that the gynecologist removed the reproductive organs without the patient’s informed consent and lied in the medical documentation. Dariusz S. has not admitted to the charges against him.
Medical Community Reaction
“Gazeta Wyborcza” spoke with doctors in Poznań who stated that Dariusz S. “gutted her like a butcher” and emphasized that this is the biggest scandal in the history of Poznań gynecology. Elżbieta Wrzesińska-Żak, director of the Raszei Hospital in Poznań, commented on the case, saying: “We can discuss for an hour whether Prof. Dariusz S. should have done it or not, but it was his individual decision. After all, he is the head of the department, we have trust in him.” Despite the prosecutor’s charges, Dariusz S. continues to operate on patients at the Poznań hospital.
