A 22-year-old man in Żuromin, Poland, faces up to three years in prison after being caught driving erratically and under the influence of alcohol on April 20th.
Driver Spotted Driving Zigzag and Against Traffic
Police monitoring a surveillance system in Żuromin observed an Audi being driven in a manner suggesting loss of control, moving in a zigzag pattern and against the flow of traffic.
A patrol was immediately dispatched and intercepted the vehicle on Olszewska Street. The driver was identified as a 22-year-old resident of the Mława district.
High Alcohol Content Confirmed
A breathalyzer test revealed the driver had over 3 promiles (0.3%) of alcohol in his system.
Legal Consequences and Fines
The driver’s driving privileges were revoked, and he was detained until sober. He now faces charges of driving under the influence, punishable by up to three years imprisonment, a substantial fine, and a court-ordered driving ban.
In addition to the criminal proceedings, the driver received 2600 złoty in fines for traffic violations. The case will be decided in court.
Dangers of Drunk Driving Emphasized
Authorities strongly condemn the driver’s actions, stating that driving with such a high blood alcohol content is effectively consenting to a potential tragedy. Drunk driving endangers not only the driver but also innocent pedestrians and other road users.
Alcohol impairs reaction time, distorts judgment, and encourages reckless behavior, frequently leading to fatal accidents.
Public Safety Reminders
The public is reminded that road safety is a shared responsibility. The slogan “Drink? Don’t Drive!” is the only acceptable rule, as even small amounts of alcohol can affect one’s ability to drive safely.
If planning to consume alcohol, arrange for a safe ride home – taxi, public transport, or a designated driver.
Reporting Reckless Drivers
Citizens are encouraged to intervene if they witness someone attempting to drive under the influence, by taking their keys or calling for help.
Report erratic driving – weaving, sudden braking, or driving against traffic – to the police by calling the emergency number 112.
The “Morning After” Risk
Be mindful of the “morning after” effect, as alcohol can remain in the system even when feeling well. If in doubt, get a free breathalyzer test at the nearest police station.
