A 31‑year‑old Polish tourist vanished on Madeira’s slopes on 2 Oct and his body was located on 9 Nov by police and local guides.
Missing tourist presumed dead
On Saturday, 9 November Portuguese media reported the discovery of the body of a 31‑year‑old Polish tourist who had gone missing on Madeira the previous week. The newspaper “Diario” first reported the case, citing its own police sources, and said police units had been dispatched to the scene. According to the report, the body was found in a difficult‑to‑reach area of the Ribeira Grande and Faias regions within the Santana municipality on the island’s eastern side. Evidence suggests the man fell from a height, with the body reportedly uncovered by a local Maderan guide who was part of the search conducted with a private rescue team hired by the tourist’s family and close relatives.
Search and police response
The disappearance of the 31‑year‑old Polish tourist was first reported by the Times of Madeira, which stated that he had set out alone on a mountain trail from São Vicente toward Pico Ruivo, Madeira’s highest peak. He was said to have spoken with family on Sunday morning, 2 October, and to have shared his location with his sister. The last signal from his phone was logged at noon in the Levada dos Tornos area, after which contact ceased entirely. Family members said he intended to reach Santana, located on the island’s other side, and that searches began immediately with assistance from Polish authorities.
Details of disappearance
Family members emphasized that the tourist had planned a solo climb, and that the search operation involved both local authorities and private helpers. Despite early morning communication, the trail proved challenging, and the final contact was lost, prompting a coordinated search across the region.
