37‑year‑old Katowice resident arrested after stealing money, documents and a phone from two elderly women—once in an elevator and again on a street—both incidents occurred in late November.
First Attack in Elevator Near Radockiego Street
In late November, an 80‑year‑old woman was returning from a bank with a purse when a man attacked her in an elevator on Radockiego Street. He forced her purse from her hand and struck her face several times. The stolen bag contained several thousand złotys, documents, payment cards and a mobile phone.
Second Attack on Kadłubka Street
Only a few days later, the same pattern occurred at Kadłubka Street. An 81‑year‑old woman was observed by the suspect, who then ran up to her and snatched her purse. Inside the bag were cash and documents; the suspect fled the scene again.
Police Identify and Apprehend Suspect
Criminal investigators from Katowice’s police department linked both incidents to the same individual—a 37‑year‑old Katowice resident. He was detained during an area patrol when he attempted to escape but was quickly subdued.
Charges and Pretrial Detention
The arrested man was brought before the prosecutor, charged with robbery and burglary, and accused of acting as a repeat offender. The prosecutor applied for a three‑month provisional detention, citing the maximum penalty of 15 years for robbery, potentially increased by 50 % for recidivism.
Police Warn Seniors
Police urge elderly citizens to exercise extra caution when traveling with large amounts of cash and to request companionship on trips to banks or home. They advise keeping valuables in secure locations.
