On the night of 22 November at 1 a.m., police in Legnica found a 56‑year‑old man walking alone along a remote stretch of the national road between Prochowice and Lubin, where temperatures had dropped to –7 °C.
Night March
At roughly 1:00 a.m. on 22 November, officers from the Road Traffic Division of the Legnica City Police received a report of a lone walker on a secluded section of the national road between Prochowice and Lubin. The night’s temperature had fallen to –7 °C, making conditions dangerous due to rapid body cooling. Police found the man, a 56‑year‑old, near the municipality of Gogołowice and immediately intervened.
No Money for Transport
Police determined that the man had been traveling from Wrocław toward Głogów. He was poorly dressed, visibly weakened, and severely chilled. Officers took him into their patrol vehicle to warm him up and restore his strength. During a conversation to assess his health and determine whether further help was needed, he admitted that he had walked because he could not afford transportation to return home from the hospital. He did not disclose whether, or where, he had slept during the several days of this journey.
Medical Assistance Arrives
The Medical Rescue Team and a patrol from Lubin police later arrived on scene, as the man had come into their operational area. “We urge people to pay special attention to those outside in low temperatures, especially the elderly, alone, intoxicated, or in isolated places,” said Jagoda Ekiert of the Legnica City Police. “If we see someone exposed to the cold, we must react. One phone call to 112 can save a life,” she added.
