A 73‑year‑old woman in Głogów was brutally murdered on January 24 by her 50‑year‑old son, who later admitted he had loved her and wanted to relieve her suffering.
Return to Głogów After Years Abroad
In December 2024, a 50‑year‑old son traveled to Głogów to care for his 73‑year‑old mother after her father’s death in October. The mother, suffering from a chronic cancer condition but medically stable, hired no staff and managed daily life with relative ease. The son had lived abroad for 18 years and had no employment or other obligations listed.
Brutal Killing of the 73-Year-Old
On January 24, after 2:30 a.m., the son attacked his mother with a hammer and knife, causing extensive head‑brain injuries and deep chest wounds that damaged her aortic arch and left lung. The defendant later washed the weapons and his clothing, slept, and called the police at about 8:00 a.m., awaiting their arrival. Witnesses reported that he was sober, showed no outward emotion, and did not cry.
Motivation and Mental State
During the investigation, the son admitted he had been contemplating the murder for some time, stating he wanted to ease her suffering and avoid future caretaking responsibilities. He also claimed he loved his mother and could not explain why he killed her. Police questioned his mental fitness; psychiatric experts diagnosed a personality disorder but found no basis for insanity. He remains under provisional psychiatric observation and faces a sentence of up to 15 years, or life imprisonment. The case is pending before the Legnica District Court.
