88-Year-Old Woman Dies, Husband Still Hospitalized in Elbląg; Health Authorities Suspect Toxic Mushroom Consumption

An 88-year-old woman has died and her 82-year-old husband remains hospitalized in Elbląg after eating poisonous mushrooms, according to health investigators who suspect food poisoning due to mushroom ingestion.

Victim’s Husband Hospitalized

The couple, both in their 80s, have been rushed to the hospital in Elbląg in recent days. The tragedy occurred when they unknowingly consumed mushrooms that were mistaken for edible mushrooms by the husband.

Case Under Investigation by Health Authorities

The Warmia-Masuria Sanitary Inspectorate has been notified about the situation and is currently investigating the case. Białe grzyby (white mushrooms) collected by the man were identified on a meadow and eaten by both. They were later found to be poisonous.

Toxic Mushroom Syndrome

The Główny Inspektor Sanitarny informs that the most common cause of mushroom poisoning is mistaken identification of species or improper preparation of dishes. Symptoms may appear within hours, but sometimes after 15 or more. Typical signs include nausea and vomiting, abdominal pain, and headache.
