900 Firefighters Battle Hong Kong Skyscraper Blaze; Hundreds Missing

A massive fire at Hong Kong’s Wang Fuk Court residential complex has claimed 44 lives, left more than 40 people critically ill in hospitals, and declared 279 residents missing as 900 firefighters battled the blaze overnight.

Fatalities and Missing

The fire at the Wang Fuk Court complex has killed 44 residents and left over 40 hospitalized in critical condition. Authorities list 279 residents as missing. At the time of the outbreak, hundreds of occupants were present in the towers.

Firefighting Response

For an entire night, 900 firefighters worked to extinguish the blaze. The high‑rise collapse and intensity required a massive manpower effort.

Scaffolding Fuels Spread

The fire spread rapidly along blue scaffolding erected around the blocks for repair work. Some towers remain on fire, prompting authorities to investigate the construction materials used during the renovation.

Fire Mesh and Materials Concerns

Jason Poon of China Monitor says that protective mesh around buildings is crucial to prevent fire spread, suggesting that inappropriate materials may have been used. Experts note that most construction mesh in Hong Kong is not fire‑resistant and that cartons and solvents on site can accelerate flames under certain weather conditions.

Police Arrests

Hong Kong police have detained three men on charges of involuntary manslaughter related to the fire.

Historical Context

Wang Fuk Court houses around 2,000 residents, with 40% of its 4,600 inhabitants over 65, many of whom have lived there since the 1980s. It is the largest residential fire in Hong Kong in at least 63 years. The 1962 Sham Shui Po fire, caused by 25 kg of stored fireworks, also killed 44 and left hundreds homeless.
