Polish security forces evacuated 17 people from a building in Olsztyn after discovering explosives and firearms, linked to a foiled terrorist plot involving three teenage suspects.
Background of the Foiled Plot
The operation in Olsztyn is connected to the detention of three teenagers in recent months who were planning a terrorist attack on a high school in Olsztyn. The suspects were gathering information on explosives and pyrotechnics and were training at shooting ranges.
They were inspired by killers such as Anders Breivik and Brenton Tarrant, and analyzed attacks in Norway, New Zealand, and the United States, looking for mistakes made by the perpetrators to improve their own skills.
The Olsztyn Operation
Agents of the Polish Internal Security Agency (ABW) conducted an operation in the Generałów housing estate in Olsztyn, where they found firearms and explosives in one of the apartments, not linked to the previously detained suspects.
Due to a “pyrotechnic threat,” 17 residents were evacuated. The ABW was carrying out activities in an investigation into suspected terrorist acts, according to the Olsztyn District Prosecutor’s Office.
Charges and Potential Sentences
The suspects face charges including participation in training that could enable them to commit terrorist crimes and familiarizing themselves with content that could facilitate such acts.
Two of the suspects were temporarily arrested in June, while a third was released with a preventive measure. They face up to 10 years in prison for the charges brought against them.
