Rare weather pattern over Europe. Meteorologists explain what’s happening in Poland

Forecasters predict warmer days ahead, but nights will remain cool, with rain expected in some regions.

Weather for the coming days

According to synoptic forecasts, the second half of the week will be slightly warmer than the first. “Nights and mornings will still be cold, but during the day, the weather will be sunny with light winds,” said Agnieszka Prasek, a spokesperson for the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management (IMGW).

On Thursday, the weather will be fine, with only greater cloudiness and rain in the southwest. Temperatures will range from 10°C in the Podhale region to 15°C in the center and 16°C in the west of the country. On Friday, it will be sunny in the north and east, while the west and south will experience rain. Temperatures will range from 12°C in the Podhale region, through 16°C in the center, to 18°C in the southwest. The weekend is expected to be sunny across most of the country, with temperatures between 17 and 19°C in most areas.

Rex block over Poland

According to forecasters, the weather in Poland will be influenced by a high-pressure system over Scandinavia until the beginning of October. This will maintain an extremely rare synoptic pattern known as the Rex block. It consists of a low-pressure system located south of a high-pressure system, both positioned at a significant distance from each other—almost vertically. They form a shape resembling the letter “S” one above the other. In this configuration, the air in the high-pressure system moves clockwise, while the low-pressure system moves counterclockwise. This synoptic pattern causes the weather to persist for a longer period. Regions under the high-pressure system can expect more sunny moments, while areas under the low-pressure system will experience more rain. This will be particularly noticeable on Thursday and Friday, when the south and southwest of the country will see more precipitation, while the rest of the country will remain dry.

Drought in Poland

It is also worth noting that, according to the Institute of Meteorology and Water Management, a hydrological drought persists over a significant area of Poland. In most of the country, forests are at risk of fire. In most places, the risk is low, but in parts of the Lublin Voivodeship, it is moderate.
