Polish-led flotilla heads to Gaza amid diplomatic tensions

A humanitarian aid flotilla, including Polish ships, has passed Crete en route to Gaza, as the Polish government confirms diplomatic efforts to ensure safety.

Humanitarian mission under attack

A flotilla carrying humanitarian aid to Gaza, including Polish, Italian, and British vessels, passed Crete after surviving a drone attack. The Global Sumud Flotilla, a civilian initiative involving over 40 countries, aims to break Israel’s blockade and deliver aid to Palestinians. The attack, which occurred overnight, targeted multiple ships, including one flying a Polish flag, but caused no injuries.

Polish government responds to concerns

Left-wing MP Katarzyna Ueberhan had previously questioned the Foreign Ministry about ensuring the safety of Polish participants. Deputy Foreign Minister Władysław Teofil Bartoszewski confirmed that Poland is taking steps to provide consular support but warned that joining the mission carries risks due to the ongoing conflict. He also reiterated Poland’s calls for Israel and Hamas to halt military actions and allow full humanitarian aid delivery.

Flotilla faces repeated attacks

The flotilla, which departed from Barcelona in early September, has been targeted twice by drones, including during a stop in Tunisia. Participants insist they carry only humanitarian aid and pose no threat. Israeli authorities have stated they will not allow the flotilla into their territorial waters.
