New drone wreckage discovered in Romania near Ukrainian border; authorities alerted

Romanian authorities confirmed the discovery of drone debris in Tulcea County, near the Ukrainian border, with a mixed team investigating the site.

Initial discovery and investigation

On September 29, Romania’s Ministry of National Defense reported that fragments of a drone were found near Contea Noua Canal in Tulcea County, following a 112 emergency call.

A joint team comprising defense ministry specialists, intelligence services, and border police is conducting an on-site investigation, with the debris to be collected for further examination.

Previous Russian drone incursion

On September 13, Romania detected a Russian drone in its airspace, prompting the deployment of two F-16 fighter jets from Fetesti Air Base.

The drone, flying over uninhabited areas, was not shot down but remained under surveillance. Small debris from the drone was later found near Chilia Veche, close to the Ukrainian border, posing no threat to residents.

Romanian defense authorities have documented 52 Russian drone attacks on Ukrainian territory since 2022, though Russia denies its drones entered Romanian airspace.

Romania condemns Russian provocations

Following the September 13 incident, Romanian Defense Minister Ionuț-Marian Munteanu stated that “Romania condemns Russia’s reckless behavior, which threatens regional stability.”

He emphasized Romania’s readiness, alongside NATO allies, to defend every inch of allied airspace.
