Turkish drones have been patrolling the Mediterranean near a flotilla carrying aid to Gaza, while Israel has not commented on the situation.
Turkish Drones Over the Flotilla
Three long-range drones from Turkey, launched from the Corlu base, have been patrolling the Mediterranean near the flotilla for three days, according to flight-tracking portals. Reuters reported the information, but Turkey has not officially commented on the purpose of the flights. Media outlets speculate the drones are ensuring the safety of the ships heading to Gaza. Previously, Italian and Spanish naval vessels, as well as the Greek coast guard, monitored the flotilla. Italy and Spain emphasize that their ships have a purely humanitarian mission and will not engage militarily.
Journey Toward Gaza
A flotilla of around 40 vessels, carrying aid for Gaza’s residents, resumed its journey after a brief stop in Greece for repairs following a drone attack on September 23. Organizers confirmed no injuries and aim to reach Gaza within days. On board are politicians, lawyers, and activists, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg and Polish lawmaker Franciszek Sterczewski. Participants insist on a peaceful approach, though they fear Israel’s response. “Israel has repeatedly shown it has red lines. We fear what might happen, but we want to remain peaceful,” said Italian MEP Benedetta Scuderi in an interview with Radio 24.
Tensions Over the Blockade
Israel maintains that its maritime blockade of Gaza is legal and necessary to combat Hamas. Italian media reported that Israeli President Isaac Herzog assured Italy’s ambassador that lethal force would not be used against the aid flotilla. However, Israel has not officially confirmed these claims. According to Reuters, the flotilla was offered the option to dock in Cyprus, where humanitarian aid could be transferred to Gaza via the Catholic Church. Health authorities in Gaza report over 65,000 deaths due to Israel’s offensive, which began after Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack.
