Row over MP Sterczewski; Bocheński Demands Reasons for Not Heading to Nigeria, Claims No Empathy

Polish MEP Tobiasz Bocheński condemned MP Franciszek Sterczewski for joining Israel’s Global Sumud flotilla, questioning why he did not travel to Nigeria and claiming lack of empathy.

Bocheński Criticizes Sterczewski’s Flotilla Participation

Polish MEP Tobiasz Bocheński, speaking on Radio ZET on 5 October, warned that the situation in Gaza is a tragedy requiring response, but criticised Sterczewski for sailing in the Mediterranean to attract attention.

He added that Sterczewski lacked empathy and that the MP had not fulfilled his parliamentary duties in the flotilla, merely filming Instagram reels to appear heroic.

Bocheński questioned why Sterczewski chose the Gaza conflict instead of Nigeria, where Christians are beheaded.

Left‑Wing MP Odors Responds

Polish left‑wing MP Dóra Olko disagreed with Bocheński’s remarks, describing them as unjust. She defended Sterczewski’s participation as an act of courage that gives the world and the people more visibility and safety.

When asked to name activists supporting Hamas, Olko demanded specific names rather than generalising the entire left wing.

Polish MPs Detained in Israeli Prison

Israeli forces seized all Global Sumud flotilla vessels, arresting participants. Some refused voluntary declarations, remaining in Israel. Sterczewski, along with Omar Faris and Karolina “Nina” Ptak, were among those held.

Fourth participant Ewa Jasiewicz accepted deportation and was transferred to Turkey on 4 October. Those in Israel await local court proceedings; most are held in Ketziot Prison in the Negev desert, where human‑rights groups warn of abuse.

Polish Foreign Ministry reported that a consul visited the detainees and assured them of safety, though Ptak began a hunger strike.
