Row in Parliament House: Drunken Slurs Erupt Under Matecki’s Leadership

On August 6, Poland’s Law and Justice MPs celebrated President Nawrocki’s inauguration, with Dariusz Matecki leading a boisterous song that sparked a heated clash with opposition senators.

Intervention at the Parliamentary House

On August 6, MPs from the Law and Justice party celebrated the inauguration of Karol Nawrocki at the parliamentary restaurant. Dariusz Matecki, among the celebrants, loudly sang a partisan chant, “Staszek piątka, Tomek dycha, a dwudziestka dla Giertycha,” set to a stadium‑style chorus. Opposition politicians criticized the refrain as a provocative insult. Witnesses say that while the MPs sang, senators from the Civic Coalition, including Tomasz Grodzki, approached, leading to a sharp exchange and intervention by the Marshal Guard, who documented the incident for Senate Marshal Małgorzata Kidawa‑Błońska.

Only Singing

Matecki told reporters that the MPs’ actions amounted to “only singing.” In contrast, Civic Coalition senators claimed that idle singing was accompanied by vulgar slurs and aggression. In a separate report, a “drunken slur under Matecki’s leadership” was said to have taken place during the inauguration, with women being targeted. Senator Agnieszka Kołacz‑Leszczyńska recalled hearing a profanity and said the Marshal Guard was shocked by how often such incidents occurred.

Series of Scandals in the Parliamentary Restaurant

It is not the first time the parliamentary restaurant has been the site of unruly conduct. In April, Senator Wadzi Tyszkiewicz reported being harassed by Łukasz Meż, who allegedly used abusive language towards him and his wife. Meż denies the claim, insisting that Tyszkiewicz provoked the incident. The Guard Guard handled the matter and documented it.

Assault in the Parliamentary Restaurant?

Earlier in the same location, Dariusz Matecki was attacked by character actor Jacek Kopczyński, who had been brought in as a Law and Justice guest. According to testimony, Kopczyński advanced aggressively, struck Matecki, and yelled at him about Zbigniew Ziobro. In February 2024, a recording surfaced of Senator Maciej Kopć, still intoxicated, berating Matecki and Confederal politicians with lewd language, after which he publicly apologized for his conduct.

Return of 1990s‑Era Conduct

Sources note that similar disruptions occurred in the Sejm two decades ago. During the Self‑Defense era, bouts of alcohol‑driven fights were common. In 2003, MPs Jerzy Pękała and Mieczysław Aszkiełowicz brawled before the parliamentary hotel after drinking. The Ethics Committee declared their behavior to have violated basic standards of decency. That same year, Andrzej Lepper smashed a glass door in attempt to block the entrance of President Aleksander Kwaśniewski.
