Tragedy struck Monday after 1 p.m. at 161 Marymonckiej Street in Warsaw. “A Toyota Proace City driver, for unknown reasons, entered the pedestrian crossing, colliding with four people,” the City Fire Brigade Command in Warsaw reported on Monday. Pedestrians had a green light at the time. The victims were three women and a man. The most severely injured was a 72‑year‑old woman, who died that same day in the hospital. Prosecutors informed Wednesday of the second person’s death. “The third person has fractures of upper and lower limbs and a spinal injury. The fourth has left the hospital after receiving treatment for head injuries,” prosecutor Andrzej Piaseczny of the Warsaw Regional Prosecutor’s Office told Gazeta.pl.

The 47‑year‑old Mariusz J. was examined on Wednesday. He faced the charge of causing a fatal accident. According to Gazeta.pl, he admitted participation in the incident but could not fully explain how it happened. He claimed he attempted to brake just before the crossing. He then helped the victims and did not flee the scene. The man had no prior convictions, not even for traffic violations. He is a professional driver. He was sober at the time and not under the influence of drugs or psychoactive substances. Prosecutors imposed preventive measures on him: a 40,000‑zł guarantee, supervision, and a ban on leaving the country. Consequently, investigators chose not to file for his arrest. Mariusz faces up to eight years in prison.
