Hołowni Denies MP Poaching Rumors, Urges Coalition Unity

Polish parliament speaker Marcin Hołowni rejected media claims that MPs from Polska 2050 were seeking an alliance with the Polish People’s Party, insisting the coalition remains intact.

Hołowni Denies MP Poaching Rumors

Speaker Marcin Hołowni rejected media claims that members of Polska 2050 were seeking an alliance with the Polish People’s Party, calling the allegations “complete nonsense.” He added that he had met with PSL leaders Władysław Kosiniak‑Kamysz and Piotr Zgorzelski last week and discussed a plan that would include deputy ministers from PLN 2050. He also mentioned that Mikołaj Dorożal could move to PSL, saying members of the opposition would be pleased.

Hołowni ended the remarks by saying, “I have never heard greater foolishness in life,” stressing his frustration with the rumors that some MPs were trying to break away from the coalition.

Coalition Unity, Red Line on MP Poaching

Hołowni highlighted that the coalition operates under a clear rule: no party is allowed to pull the other’s MPs to its side. He assured that Polska 2050 remains united. “We cannot break; we are a cohesive unit,” he said.

He warned that if any party were to start poaching MPs, it would signal the end of the coalition. “Even a single person tempted to do so would cross the red line and our party would leave the government,” Hołowni asserted. He noted that a hypothetical scenario where Polska 2050 had no MPs would mean no government, a path the coalition would not take.

New York Visit Not a Job Interview

Hołowni clarified that his recent trip to New York, which included meetings with UN Secretary‑General António Guterres and the General Assembly Chair, was linked to his work with the Polish diaspora. He met representatives from various Polish communities and attended cultural events such as Paradże Pułaskiego.

He stated that the encounters with UN officials did not relate to his candidacy for the High Commissioner for Refugees. The discussions focused primarily on Poland’s role in the UN and international cooperation.

UNHCR Candidacy Remains Transparent Process

Hołowni confirmed that he had submitted an application for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees position and treats the pursuit as an open and transparent process. He described himself as a realist who approaches the procedure humbly, hoping to reach the next stage and join the invited interview group.

He said the Secretary‑General’s decision will be forthcoming and that he feels fully prepared to compete for the role. He noted that other candidates from Poland include Roman Mazur, who previously ran for the European Parliament and later joined an organization assisting African refugees.

No Space for Pathological MPs

Hołowni addressed comments from Minister Stefan Krajewski, who announced he would cease staying in the parliamentary hotel due to “patoposłów.” Hołowni said he had never encountered such motivation and that health reasons are usually the true cause.

He urged the minister to submit a written account of who caused the discomfort and emphasized that there is no place for pathological MPs or other pathologies in the Sejm office. He added that the parliament is not a boarding school; MPs are adults judged by voters and recent incidents of heated exchanges between lawmakers were highlighted.
