Putin Promises New Nuclear Weapons, Claims “Soon We Will Announce”

Russian President Vladimir Putin confirmed that Russia is actively developing new nuclear weapons systems, promising a public announcement in the near future, during a press conference on June 7, 2024.

Everything Is Going According to Plan

During a Friday press conference, Putin addressed questions about extending the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty (START). Earlier he had presented a proposal to U.S. President Donald Trump. He stated that a few months could suffice if there is goodwill, and if the U.S. deems it unnecessary, it will not concern Russia, emphasizing that everything is progressing as planned.

Putin on New Types of Weaponry

Putin reiterated that Russia’s new nuclear deterrence exceeds that of any other nuclear‑armed state and is actively being developed. He noted ongoing tests proving successful and said the country would soon announce the weapon types previously signaled, highlighting that intercontinental sea and air components are highly innovative and modern.

Russia Loses Credibility of Deterrence

A recent Gazeta.pl article by journalist Maciek Kucharczyk argues that Russia’s deterrence credibility has markedly diminished. The piece cites a decline in Western support for Ukraine and notes that nuclear deterrence rhetoric has become less effective, concluding that Russia has lost a vital component of its deterrence, not entirely but significantly.
