Confidential Military Documents Discovered in Trash Dump—’Atomic Bomb’ Scandal

On October 16, Onet reported that confidential military documents were found in a landfill near an explosive‑materials dump, sparking a scandal dubbed “atomic bomb.”

Discovery and Content

On October 16, the digital news portal Onet announced that confidential military paperwork had been recovered from a landfill situated near an explosive‑material dump. Journalists receiving the material claimed that plastic bags containing the documents were found, with some of them having been partially shredded by the shredding machine on site. The files include maps of military facilities, evacuation plans for armaments during wartime, operational procedures, technical descriptions of explosive material depots, personal data of unit personnel, and deployment plans for training exercises. Some documents were marked “restricted.” Former Eurokorpus commander Gen. Jarosław Gromadziński called the incident an “atomic bomb” and a scandal that exposes the army’s disarray.

Legality of the Copies

According to the 2nd Regional Logistics Base (2RB‑Log), which oversees the site, the papers received by the media were “illegally made copies” rather than originals. The unit stated that the originals had either been archived or destroyed in accordance with applicable regulations. Reporters countered that most of the documents contain official stamps, office numbers, and officers’ signatures, indicating they are originals.

Military Gendarmerie Reaction

Following the discovery, the 2RB‑Log launched an internal inquiry and notified the Military Gendarmerie. Rear‑Admiral Marek Chmiel, spokesperson for the Support Inspectorate of the Armed Forces, said that the investigation would determine whether the documents were shredded correctly, who had access to them, and whether the transfer appears to be a provocation, according to a source close to the Ministry of Defence.
