Police in the Trzebień municipality have charged Adrian W. with the 2001 murder of 19‑year‑old Karolina, a case closed in 2001 but reopened in 2024.
Background of the 2001 Disappearance
Karolina, 19 at the time, was last seen alive on 2 September 2001 at a harvest festival in Pruszcz. Police were called to escort her home, but she never arrived.
Her mother reported her missing on 4 September, and after several days a body was found floating in the Vistula River. Initial investigations suggested accidental drowning.
First Investigation and Case Closure
The case was formally closed in 2001, with no charges filed against Adrian W. The body’s condition and the circumstances of its discovery led authorities to rule it a presumed accident.
Reopening and New Evidence
In April 2024 the Bydgoszcz District Prosecutor’s Office reopened the investigation under the supervision of the Bydgoszcz Police Crime Division. Biological evidence was retested and witness statements re‑examined.
Current Charge and Legal Status
Adrian W. is now formally charged with murder by strangulation of Karolina. He denies the accusation, and a provisional detention has been imposed pending trial. He is currently serving a life sentence for an unrelated murder of 18‑year‑old Katarzyna, convicted in 2002.
Context: Ongoing Death Sentence
The life sentence for the 2002 murder remains in effect, highlighting the seriousness of the new indictment and the broader legal ramifications for the individual involved.
