On Friday afternoon, Magdalena Adamowicz, widow of the murdered Gdańsk mayor Paweł Adamowicz, shared a touching Facebook post about the state of the world.
Widow’s Social Media Statement
On Friday afternoon, Magdalena Adamowicz, widow of the 2019 murdered Gdańsk mayor, posted on X that she had retrieved the clothing in which her husband died. She wrote that after almost seven years the court returned the garments, “completely soaked with his blood.” She added that on the same day she learned Jarosław Kaczyński was to present Jacek Kurski as a “media liberator,” and that the world can be cruelly insolent. She ended by saying she would stop before her pain turns to hatred.
Attack on Paweł Adamowicz
Paweł Adamowicz died on 14 January 2019, the day after he was attacked on stage during the televised final of the Great Orchestra of Christmas Charity. Just before 20:00, during the “Lights to Sky” program, Adamowicz thanked volunteers and began a countdown. Attacker Stefan Wilmont ran up to him and thrust a knife three times, and the man was immediately subdued.
Judicial Proceedings
On 16 March 2023, the Gdańsk District Court sentenced Stefan Wilmont to life imprisonment for Adamowicz’s murder, citing a motive deemed deserving of special condemnation. On 23 January 2024 the Gdańsk Court of Appeal upheld the lower court’s ruling.
Kurski at the Law and Justice Convention
Jacek Kurski is scheduled to appear in a Saturday panel titled “Public Media Reform” at the Law and Justice convention in Katowice. While heading TVP, Kurski’s broadcasts portrayed Adamowicz as a “property swindler,” co‑conspirator in the Amber Gold affair, and a policy fanatic with nationalistic leanings, according to a Newton Media report for the Gdańsk City Office. The Media Ethics Council stated that none of the reviewed publications gave Adamowicz a chance to refute the accusations or present counter‑arguments.
