The European Union has begun preparations to relocate its military training mission to Ukraine, a move that ties training operations with security guarantees for Kyiv following an end to hostilities.
EU initiates relocation plan for training mission
Polish Radio reported that the EU is preparing to move its military training mission to Ukraine. The move is intended as part of a security guarantee to Kyiv pending cessation of hostilities. Training currently takes place within EU territory for security reasons. Since the mission began in autumn 2022, about 80,000 soldiers have been trained across 11 EU countries, many in Poland, which hosts one of the mission’s headquarters.
Key points from the EU document
The document outlines challenges from the lack of EU presence in Ukraine, such as logistical burdens and risks of moving troops farther from front lines. It notes three training centres in western Ukraine that are not yet fully operational due to insufficient infrastructure and qualified trainers. EU experts acknowledge that Moscow’s objectives remain unchanged—rewriting the European security order and subjugating Ukraine. A successful cessation of war would require the EU to be ready, prompting early mandate changes.
Frontline tensions in Pokrovsko
Ukrainian authorities report fierce fighting in Pokrovsko, where Russian forces are believed to infiltrate the town. Heavy clashes have continued for months, with the Ukrainian General Staff noting dozens of casualties. Recent intelligence indicates that Russians, moving small infantry groups, have amassed about 200 soldiers within the city. President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russians focused their main shock units on Pokrovsko, creating a tight situation locally and in nearby areas. Ukrainian defenders face logistical difficulties amid ongoing battles on the city and its outskirts.
Russian objectives in the region
The United Nations Information Agency (UNIAN), citing Ukrainian soldiers, reported that Russians aim to capture cities in the coming weeks, having been directed to secure the area.
