The Polish Supreme Prosecutor’s Office has petitioned the Sejm to lift the parliamentary immunity of PiS MP and former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro, demanding his arrest on 26 alleged crimes tied to misuse of justice funds.
Prosecutor Seeks to Detain and Arrest Ziobro
The Supreme Prosecutor’s Office filed a request with the Sejm’s Chairman, Szymon Hołownia, to lift the parliamentary immunity of PiS member and former Justice Minister Zbigniew Ziobro. The petition, signed by General Prosecutor Waldemar Żur, asks for his detention and temporary arrest on accusations that he led an organized crime group.
26 Alleged Crimes Against Ziobro
Prosecutor Anna Adamiak explained that the request is based on findings of Investigation Team No. 2, which examined irregularities in the use of funds from the Justice Fund. Ziobro is charged with 26 crimes, including abuse of power, failure to perform duties, and directing an organized criminal group. These actions are said to be directly related to his former role as Justice Minister and his authority over the Justice Fund.
Risk of Collusion and Document Misuse
Investigators claim that funds intended to aid crime victims were misappropriated for political and personal purposes, with some money allegedly directed to organizations linked to politicians of the Sovereign Poland party. The prosecution alleges that Ziobro abused his position by directing colleagues to award grants to entities he identified. The petition also cites the risk of collusion and document concealment as justification for a temporary arrest.
11 Individuals Accused in the Justice Fund Investigation
So far, eleven people, including former Justice Ministry officials and Ziobro’s associates, have been heard by prosecutors. One suspect is former Deputy Minister Michał Woś. Under Polish law, criminal responsibility for a parliament member requires the Sejm’s approval. Once granted, formal charges could be presented.
