On October 27, Polish Confederation MP Konrad Berkowicz was caught taking goods worth 390 PLN from an IKEA store in Warsaw, issued a 500 PLN fine, and refused to invoke immunity.
IKEA Theft Incident
On October 27, Radio ZET journalist Mariusz Gierszewski reported that Konrad Berkowicz, a Member of Parliament from the Confederation, was caught taking items valued at 390 PLN out of an IKEA store. The incident occurred behind the cash register, and police were called to the scene. He had taken small items such as towels and a frying pan.
Police Action; Fine Issued
Berkowicz was issued a 500 PLN fine and did not invoke his parliamentary immunity. He apologized, returned the items and paid the fine on the spot.
Prime Minister Tusk Criticises
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk commented on the incident on social media, joking that Berkowicz was caught but that it is still less problematic than similar accusations against members of the ruling party. He urged that such offences be taken seriously.
Party Colleague Mentzen Defends
Sławomir Mentzen, a parliamentary colleague, defended Berkowicz, explaining that the MP had made large purchases at self‑checkout while wearing headphones, which caused items to be missed on the scanner. He argued that the situation was a mistake, not an intentional theft, and criticised the sharp attack by other politicians.
MP Berkowicz Responds
In a social‑media post, Berkowicz said the incident was a stupid mistake caused by rushing and missing items at the self‑checkout. He reaffirmed that he accepted the fine, did not claim immunity, and challenged the accusation of theft, questioning the hypocrisy of parties accused of larger scandals.
