Polish Confederation MP Konrad Berkowicz has admitted leaving an Ikea purchase unpaid, prompting calls from Kraków City Council for his resignation and stirring debate over his use of parliamentary immunity.
Nieznański Defends Berkowicz, Admits Own Omission
TVP journalist Justyna Dobrosz‑Oracz asked MP Michał Nieznański whether the incident should end Berkowicz’s career. Nieznański said he would first hear Berkowicz’s version, noting that he too once failed to pay by accident.
He recalled paying for a cola, forgetting the petrol, and only remembering five minutes later.
“What kind of mistake is that? Should I go sit down?” he added, sounding somewhat ironic.
Berkowicz Detained at Ikea, Fined 500 zł
In late October, Konrad Berkowicz, MP and Vice‑President of the New Hope party, was stopped by shop security after failing to pay for several items at a Kraków Ikea.
The police were called and he received a 500‑zł fine. He claimed a hurried error, noting that some purchases had not been scanned.
He reported that the matter had been resolved.
Kraków City Council Demands Resignation, Accuses Hypocrisy
The council adopted a resolution urging Berkowicz to resign from his parliamentary mandate.
Opposition parties criticize the Confederation’s hypocrisy, recalling its earlier condemnation of PiS MPs for similar incidents.
