On November 7, the Polish Sejm authorized the arrest and provisional detention of MP Zbigniew Ziobro, who remains in Budapest, sparking debate over a potential pardon by President Nawrocki.
Sejm authorizes Ziobro’s arrest and provisional detention
On Friday, 7 November, the Sejm approved Ziobro’s commitment to legal responsibility and the temporary incarceration of the PiS deputy. The execution of this decision will be carried out by officers of the Internal Security Agency.
The spokesperson for the minister coordinating special services, Jacek Dobrzyński, confirmed the measures and noted that Ziobro is not present in Poland, still residing in Budapest.
President’s spokesperson comments on possible pardon
When asked whether President Karol Nawrocki would grant a pardon to Ziobro, spokesman Rafał Leśkiewicz said that the former justice minister is not yet convicted and no charges have been filed.
Leśkiewicz added that the pardon decision would only arise once charges are formally introduced, and that it is the President’s prerogative at each stage of the legal process.
He further described the attempt to indict Ziobro as a “political kaleidoscope” and hinted at the President’s view of this gesture as political interference.
Ziobro addresses potential asylum request
The former justice minister reiterated that he has no immediate plans to seek political asylum abroad and declined to disclose further intentions at this time.
He emphasized that he will pursue various legal and political measures against what he calls “bad people” and clarified that his departure from Poland was not an escape; he had actually been invited to Budapest while already there.
Ziobro noted that media reports about his presence in Hungary were widespread and that the judicial process began only after he was already in Budapest.
