Sarkozy Released on Bail, Awaiting Appeal in March

Former French President Nicolas Sarkozy was released on bail from La Sante prison in Paris, remaining under court supervision until his appeal is heard in March next year.

Release from Prison

Former French president Nicolas Sarkozy was freed from La Sante prison in Paris after a recent court ruling. The decision cited a low risk of recidivism and flight. Within minutes of the ruling, he was escorted out by police and taken in a vehicle guarded by dozens of officers.

Court Supervision and Restrictions

Although released, Sarkozy remains under judicial supervision until his appeal is heard in March 2025. He is prohibited from traveling abroad, from contacting co‑accused defendants, the justice minister, and former collaborator Gérald Damarin. These restrictions aim to prevent foreign travel and coordination with other defendants.

Reason for Conviction

Sarkozy was convicted in September 2023 on charges of conspiracy linked to a bribery scheme involving former Libyan dictator Muammar Gaddafi. The alleged scheme was intended to funnel money to finance his 2007 presidential campaign.
