NATO Alarmed by Russian Drone Attacks on Ukraine, Hampering Romanian Fighter Jets

Russians launched a drone attack on Ukrainian ports on the Danube on the night of 10‑11 November, hitting near Romanian towns and leaving the country to warn residents and stop fighter jets from taking off.

Alarm in Romania

During the night of 10–11 November, Russian forces carried out a mass drone strike on Ukrainian ports situated on the Danube. The drones targeted areas including Izmaił and Reni, resulting in numerous explosions audible throughout Romania.

Romanian authorities issued phone alerts to residents in the Tulczy region, warning of a potential threat. Although the air situation was monitored, adverse weather conditions prevented Romanian fighter jets from taking off—a routine response in similar incidents.

Drone Wreckage Near Ukrainian Border

Five kilometres from the border, near the town of Grindu in eastern Romania, authorities recovered debris from a military drone believed to be a Russian Gerań type.

Radar records indicate the drone struck the ground shortly after the initial night of attacks. Military units secured the area, collected fragments, and are continuing investigations to determine whether the aircraft contained explosive material.

New Anti‑Drone Systems in Poland and Romania

Repeated incursions by Russian drones into Romanian airspace have prompted Poland and Romania to deploy a new American anti‑drone system, Merops. The compact system can be housed behind a mid‑size truck and employs AI to identify and engage drones even if satellite or electronic communications are jammed.

Danish forces are also slated to use Merops, part of NATO’s broader initiative to strengthen its eastern flank.
