A 14‑year‑old was stabbed at Bydgoszcz’s Focus shopping mall on Thursday, with a 21‑year‑old suspect now in police custody, while a separate incident in Sanok saw a gunman kill a firefighter and attack police officers.
Stabbing in Bydgoszcz Mall
Police received a report before 15:00 that a teenager had been stabbed in a dressing‑room at the Focus mall on Jagiellońska Street. The 14‑year‑old was transported to hospital, where his life was threatened.
The mall’s security identified a 21‑year‑old man, who was apprehended and handed over to police for questioning. He was found sober. Authorities say the 14‑year‑old and 21‑year‑old were acquainted, but the motive remains unclear.
He will be interrogated by the prosecutor’s office on Friday.
Gunman Kills Firefighter in Sanok
On Thursday morning, police entered an apartment in Sanok after a man locked himself and his mother inside and triggered a gas detector. They discovered a deceased woman inside the home.
From another room, a man armed with a maczet (large knife) emerged and attacked two police officers and a firefighter with a sharp weapon. Police used direct force and then firearms; the attacker died despite resuscitation efforts.
Investigators and the prosecutor are still determining the circumstances of the tragedy.
