Polish Political Scientist Survives Colon Cancer Surgery, Shares Recovery

Polish political scientist Marek Migalski underwent colon cancer surgery and posted his recovery status on Instagram on 16 November.

Surgery and Recovery

Marek Migalski had an operation to remove a tumour‑affected portion of the rectum. He reported the surgery was successful, with minimal pain, and credited the medical and nursing team at St. Barbara Hospital in Sosnowiec. Migalski stated he would return home in a few days and await histopathological results to decide if further chemotherapy is needed. He expressed gratitude to online supporters for their encouraging messages.

Advocating Early Screening

In the same Instagram post, Migalski urged people to undergo colonoscopy, gastroscopy, marker tests, and CT scans. He noted that an earlier screening five years earlier could have removed a polyp before a major operation was required. He called for timely testing, even during New Year’s resolution period, stating it could be the most important decision of one’s life.

Government Screening Programme

Poland’s NFZ offers several free preventive programmes, including colorectal cancer screening for individuals aged 50‑65 (or 40‑49 if a first‑degree relative has colorectal cancer). The programme also covers breast and cervical cancer prevention.
