Passenger’s Burning Phone Forces Warsaw‑Istanbul Flight to Return

On Friday, 21 November, a Warsaw‑to‑Istanbul flight returned to Warsaw after a passenger’s phone burst into smoke, forcing the crew to use a fire extinguisher.

Return to Warsaw‑Okęcie

The aircraft was scheduled to fly from Warsaw to Istanbul but had to return after approximately 20 minutes of flight.

Smoke caused by mobile‑phone battery

A passenger’s phone battery malfunctioned, producing smoke that prompted the crew to deploy a fire extinguisher.

Crew and passengers handled calmly

According to TVN reporter, the aircraft remained otherwise calm; the crew managed the situation professionally and guided passengers to the terminal.

Firefighting units on standby

Two fire‑service units waited on the tarmac; firefighters received the device and escorted passengers to the terminal, allowing the flight to land with a 2½‑hour delay.

Airport evacuation unrelated incident

Separately, a part of the departure hall at Chopin Airport was evacuated because luggage had been left unattended, temporarily blocking vehicle access. Evacuation ended before the flight’s arrival.
