In Warsaw, Izabela Dorn has filed a lawsuit seeking 1 million zloty in damages from the State Treasury for her late husband’s political repression.
Fight for Compensation
Izabela Dorn, the late politician’s third wife, has lodged a claim against the State Treasury in the Warsaw District Court. Her suit emphasizes the sacrifices Ludwik Dorn made in defending freedom and seeks acknowledgement of the hardships endured by his family.
The complaint calls for the testimonies of former wives and Dorn’s daughter, who will be subpoenaed in the legal process.
Ludwik Dorn’s Opposition Activities
Dorn began his opposition work in 1971 as a member of the Workers’ Defense Committee, actively defending arrested laborers. He was imprisoned in 1980, then led the Social Research Centre of the Solidarność Confederation in the Mazovia region.
During the martial law period he went underground, hiding in Warsaw and Gdańsk, and later helped establish the Law and Justice movement. He served as Minister of Internal Affairs, Minister of Administration, Deputy Prime Minister, and Marshal of the Sejm before dying in 2022 at age 67.
Growing Claims for Compensation
Prosecutor Stanisław Wieśniakowski notes that many individuals are now filing claims under the 1991 “April Law,” which allows victims and their families to receive state compensation for political repression.
He said legal battles now focus mainly on determining the compensation amount, reflecting a broader trend of survivors seeking reimbursement.
