Polish MP Marcin Romanowski allegedly urged a promotional television spot for the Justice Fund and faces accusations of misappropriating funds, according to emails obtained by Onet.
Email Allegations About Spot Production
Onet accessed a set of emails that purportedly link Marcin Romanowski of the Polish ruling party PiS with officials responsible for the Justice Fund. The correspondence suggests Romanowski, in December 2019, may have feared an investigation by the National Anti-Corruption Bureau (NIK).
Content of the Proposed TV Spot
The emails outline a plan for a TV spot that should mix emotional and dynamic elements. It was to showcase actions such as a woman who has suffered domestic abuse receiving help, a firefighter saving a life, a doctor resuscitating a child after an operating room incident, the launch of a clinic for coma patients, children wearing safety vests, and a school project led by handball player Artur Siódmiak.
No Evidence That the Spot Was Produced
Investigators have not found confirmation that a spot matching these specifications was actually made, and Romanowski has not answered inquiry from the media.
Romanowski’s Criminal Charges
He is suspected of involvement in an organized criminal group and of exceeding official duties. Authorities allege he steered grant awards and misappropriated over 107 million zlotys, attempting a similar loss of 58 million zlotys. Misappropriation is defined as unlawfully transferring someone else’s property for personal use.
Court Orders Temporary Arrest
In December, the Warsaw District Court requested Romanowski’s temporary detention, but he fled to Hungary before the order could be enforced.
