The An‑22, a Soviet-designed turbo‑jet transporter, first appeared in 1966 and remains the world’s largest turbofan aircraft built for moving weapons and other military equipment over long distances.
Crash Location and Time
The aircraft was reported to have crashed in the Ivanovo region, northeast of Moscow, on Tuesday, 9 December.
Crew and Survivors
Seven crew members were aboard, but no information has yet emerged on whether anyone survived the impact.
Search and Rescue
Rescue operations are underway at the crash site. TASS reported that debris was found floating in a nearby water reservoir.
Recent Status of An‑22 Fleet
In the summer of 2024, the Russian air force announced the suspension of the remaining An‑22 aircraft after a recent overhaul.
