On December 9, Dr Gizela Jagielska announced her departure from Oleśnica Hospital’s obstetrics ward, and the next day prosecutors closed an abortion‑related investigation against her.
Social Media Announcement
On Tuesday, December 9, Dr Jagielska posted a video stating that after ten years at the local maternity hospital she would no longer be present from January 1. She noted that this was not her choice and promised to reveal her next destination soon.
She thanked former colleagues for a decade of work and wished those who forced her exit well, admitting she felt disappointed but remained measured.
Hospital’s Contract Rationale
The Oleśnica County Hospital indicated that contracts ending December 31, 2025 for certain obstetrics staff, including Dr Jagielska, were subject to a public tender per Article 26 of the 2011 Health Care Act.
Only two offers were received for the role of Coordinator of the Delivery, Midwifery and Pregnancy Pathology Block for 2026‑2027, and the most favourable was awarded. The tender documents are publicly available on the hospital’s BIP website.
Prosecutor’s Closure of Case
On Wednesday, December 10, the Oleśnica District Prosecutor’s Office announced it was dropping the preliminary investigation into Dr Jagielska’s abortion. The inquiry had begun after media claims that the procedure allegedly violated law.
Investigators interviewed witnesses and reviewed extensive medical records, concluding that no criminal conduct was evident.
Coverage in Polish Press
The case was highlighted by the newspaper “Gazeta Wyborcza” in an article titled “Anita: Closed in a Psychiatric Ward. I Had to Give Birth to a Sick Child and Surrender It for Testing,” which detailed a 36‑week abortion performed by Dr Jagielska for a woman in danger of serious fetal malformations.
The article underscores the broader debate over abortion legality and medical decision‑making in Poland.
