Swedish entrepreneur Jesper Brodin, former IKEA chief, is seen as the favorite to succeed Szymon Hołowni as UN High Commissioner for Refugees, according to Polish media.
Brodin Seen as the Leading Candidate
Polish media report that Jesper Brodin, the ex‑chairman of the furniture giant IKEA, is the frontrunner in the race for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees position. At this stage the appointment has not yet been confirmed.
Hołowni Not Mentioned Among Favorites
TVN24 notes that Szymon Hołowni was not listed “among the favorites” by the station. The Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres has not yet made a final decision, and the chosen candidate must receive approval from the UN General Assembly.
Polish Cabinet’s Support for Hołowni
Deputy Foreign Minister Marcin Bosacki said in a radio interview that Hołowni’s chances “never exceeded 50 percent.” He added that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs had strongly supported the former parliament speaker, organizing trips and talks with key stakeholders worldwide. Bosacki characterized the bid as a long shot and noted that even after meetings in New York the candidate remained unlikely to secure the role.
