Prof. Jacek Semaniak, who helmed Poland’s Main Office of Metrology from November 2020 until his death, passed away, leaving a legacy of institutional reform and research advancement.

Tenure and Institutional Reforms

He guided GUM through a legal and organizational overhaul, transforming it into a research‑and‑development oriented entity over five years.

Major Projects and Digital Initiatives

He oversaw the construction and launch of the Świętokrzyski Laboratory Campus in Kielce, and the office expanded its digital services through projects such as Świteź, eCzasPL, TRANS‑TACHO, and CyberGUM.

Role in National Education and Science Policy

His leadership extended to the regional Metrology and Calibration Offices; he helped launch the Ministry of Education and Science’s Polska Metrologia program, fostering R&D in Polish scientific institutions.

Academic Career and Scientific Contributions

A professor of physical sciences at Jan Kochanowski University since 1988, he served as pro‑rector for teaching and student affairs, pro‑rector for general affairs, and rector. His research on low‑temperature plasma and x‑ray emission earned publications in Nature, Physical Review Letters, Physical Review, and The Astrophysical Journal.
