According to TVN24 and Devex reports dated 12 December, the UN may appoint former Iraqi President Barham Salih as Commissioner for Refugees. This would break the long‑standing tradition of European leadership in the organization, which has been dominated by European nationals since World War II.

Hołowni Announces Candidacy for UN Refugee Commissioner

On 29 September, Polish entrepreneur and former presidential candidate Szymon Hołowni declared his intention to apply for the UN Commissioner for Refugees role.

Search Process and Shortlist

The incumbent, Philip Grandi, will step down in December, prompting a search for a replacement. In mid‑October, the Polish daily Rzeczpospolita reported that Hołowni was among a shortlist of three candidates.
