Trump Renames Kennedy Center, Adds His Name

On December 18, a Trump‑appointed Board of Trustees in Washington, D.C. unanimously renamed the Kennedy Center, adding his surname to the historic name.

Decision of the New Trustees

On December 18, the trustees of the Kennedy Center, entirely appointed by Donald Trump, unanimously approved the name change. The decision followed the president’s earlier move to dismiss the previous trustees and install his own nominees.

White House spokesperson Karoline Leavitt said the institution would reach a new level of success and visibility, claiming the board honored the president’s “incredible work in saving the building.”

What Is the Kennedy Center

Opened in 1971, the Kennedy Center has long been regarded as one of the United States’ most important cultural institutions. It hosts prestigious concerts, theatrical productions, and gala events featuring international artists.

Until now it carried the name of President John F. Kennedy. The renaming has sparked controversy in artistic circles, who worry the move is purely political and threatens the institution’s historic, bipartisan character.

Kennedy Family Outraged

The trustees appear unaware that the Kennedy Center is a memorial to President John F. Kennedy. Renaming it to “Lincoln” or “Jefferson” would be offensive to great presidents and insulting to the great president himself. Regardless of the short‑sighted decision, it will remain the John F. Kennedy Performing Arts Center.

Joseph Kennedy III, a relative and former House member, reminded that the institution’s name is set by federal law and cannot be altered so easily.

Representative Joyce Beatty denied that the vote was unanimous, saying the conference was silenced and opposition was not allowed to be heard.

Another Move for the President

This is not the first Trump administration action to attach the incumbent president’s name to a prestigious institution. Earlier this year his name was added to the Washington Peace Institute. A Trump Arch of Triumph is also planned in the capital.

Trump frequently highlights his achievements and public role. Recently, within the same walls of the Kennedy Center, he received a FIFA Peace Award custom‑made for him, which also generated mixed reactions.
